First Outing of 2011

A friend of mine, Greg, and I decided to hit the river yesterday for a go at some smallies.  This was my first outing of 2011.  Up until this past week the temps here have been in the low 30s.  This past week they hit the high 60s and low 70s.  Anyways, we decided to hit the Potomac River.  There is a warm water discharge area from a Pepco plant that the fish love to hangout at so we decided to go there.  I brought my 5wt with a sinking line and my eel worms.  I managed to get three strikes.  That was it.  All day.  I did manage to fall on the rocks and almost split my head open.  Instead, I only managed to smash my knee into a rock.  It hurt.  All night.  In the end though I realized that it was nice to just be out and about and to shake the cobwebs off.  Trout season is just around the corner so maybe I will have better luck with them!

  1. Careful on those rocks, you can do some serious damage to yourself. What is the best water temp for the smallies to really become active? I fish for spots here in Alabama, and when the water temp reaches 60 they start to really feed. Just curious have you signed on to my blog? I have got your blog on my blog roll, and looking forward to your future post.

  2. Yeah Bill my feet got caught up in one of the rocks as I tried to move. I must have looked like a bird flapping its wings as I attempted to stay upright. It didn't work. I also follow your blog. I have been. I just answered your question about what lure to use for the big five.

As for the smallies, I usually dont start fishing for them until May or June. We tend to have a lot of rain in March and April which clearly makes the river muddy, high and very fast. Although with the warm water discharge you can fish for them year round which is what Greg has been doing.
