Fruit Cocktail Popper size 8

This is my take on Dave Whitlock's Fruit Cocktail deer hair popper. I am actually really excited and pleased with this one. Each band of colors was really four coats of paint. The tail is yellow calf with some rainbow krystal flash. The hackle is dyed chartreuse grizzly saddle hackle. For the legs, I chose chartreuse and orange medium rubber legs. It took me quite a while to paint. They have been finished for the past week but I was waiting to "unveil" it until I got the entire thing put together. Let me know what you think.

  1. Nice fly. I actually tied the deer hair version. When tying hard body cork poppers, I like to use a clear coat finish to help protect the paint and body.

    Nice!!

  2. Thanks riverwalker34. Do you have any luck with the ones you tie? I havent tied these before so I cant wait to try them. I seal my bodies before I paint with four coats of Delta Ceramcoat Pre Sealer and then when I am done painting them I seal them with four coats of Delta Ceramcoat Gloss Exterior/Interior varnish. I find that for me this works fine as long as I dont bounce the fly off the rocks, trees etc... to much.

  4. Yep I buy these as well from J. Stoackard. If you turn them around you can make sliders out of them. I have another five packs still to make so that is my plan for at least one of them.

  5. Just found your blog. I have been going through your post and found all to be interesting reads----I am especially impressed with your popper tying. I really like the color combos you have created. I don’t tie my own flies but I must admit if I keep finding blogs like yours I may have to start learning the technique. I am into the fly fishing for bass, gills and of course trout. I do more warm water fishing with the fly than cold water, because living in Jasper Alabama we are somewhat limited to the trout fishing. The only time I fish for trout is when my wife and I go to our daughters in Tennessee; there I fish the Caney Fork. I am going to become one of your followers, because I feel our blogs parallel each other. I am looking forward to more great post. Thanks for sharing
