Sorry for the late report people. I have been swamped at work and my daughter had to be hospitalized. Needless to say I have been there instead of fishing, tying or blogging. I do have some exciting news to share with everyone but it will have to wait until tomorrow. I am hoping to get the word tomorrow which will allow me to share the word with you all so....stay tuned. Well Greg and I were in a neighboring county on 05/25/2011 for business. We had a chance to fish the ponds we always fish both before work as well as during lunch. The trip before was tough at the small pond. There was really no bank to speak of since the water was high given all the rain we have had. Also, there wasn't really any place for me to cast. I had to do a modified roll cast and I was only able to fish in one spot. Despite these limitations, I managed to land 9 before the whistle blew to start work. All of them were gills. They were all caught on my Monocacy Bumble Bee and all looked to be about the same size. I only managed to snap a photo of one of them and Blogger doesn't like it so I can't share. Trust me these guys weren't much bigger than say 7 or so inches but they were fun nonetheless.
At lunch we hit the big pond and had a blast. We crushed them. Well I crushed them. Greg again tried to cheat and only used his spinning rod. I was catching them on poppers, the Monocacy Bumble Bee, Road Kill nymphs and Clousers. Everything worked. It was just one of those days. Only one had any real size to it. I did mange to catch one largemouth. All in all though it is always fun to catch fish on the fly rod. It is even better when you have to beat them off with a stick because they love everything you are throwing at them!

Poppers, Gurglers, and Bream Bugs Oh My
Here are some new poppers and color combos I have been working on. I also tied a gurgler in a new color combo. I was lucky enough to be asked to join a Bluegill swap at flytyingforum.com. I made two dozen bream bugs for the swap. I really dont have a name for them so I am just calling them bream bugs. I did a dozen in a black/rust combo and a dozen in a black/olive combo. They were tied on a Mustad 3366 size 10. Here they are:

Winners Finally Announced
Well after much debate and argument, the wife and I have finally decided on the winners of the fly naming contest. Here they are:
Orange-Safety Cone Slayer. This name made us laugh. The winner is Fin Follower.
Yellow-Luscious Lemon. Honestly this was a close one between this name and Lusty Lemon done by John. Both are great names but the winner is Jay
Purple-Purple Night Stalker. The wife and I debated over this one for quite some time. I prevailed in the end! The winner is Chasing Blue Lines
Congrats to the winners and a big thank you to all who entered names. To the winners, please contact me at jandmflies@gmail.com with your address and the size you would like to have. The choices are either a size 8 or size 10. Again, thanks to all!

My Poppers Being Used By Others and Working Well
I spend a lot of time on flytyingforum.com If you tie and you havent checked it out yet take some time and do so. Anyways, I have been in a few fly swaps there. One of the last ones I did was a Bluegill swap. I tied up some Fish Foolin' Frog poppers in size 10 and sent them on their way to the swap meister. A few days ago I got a PM from Mark Varga. He lost the popper but managed to catch quite a number of bluegill on it as well as his first largemouth bass on the fly rod with it. I promised Mark I would send him another one. I wanted to share with everyone photos he took of some of the fish including the bass. It does my heart good to see my fly in a fish's mouth after being used by someone else. Clearly it did well and I was happy to hear that.

Finally.............
We got the internet and phone back yesterday. Man it was almost a week without a phone and the internet. I was surprised at how much I missed both and how hard it made our life. I had to call home one night to speak to the wife and I couldn't reach her on her cell phone. So, I had to call a neighbor and ask them to go over and tell the wife to call me. I have a lot of catching up to do with the blog so stay tuned. I also have a busy weekend planned with family activities but I will do the best I can to catch up. Alright so off to the fishing report for the first post. I managed to hit a pond last week in a neighboring county with Greg. We did really well. I caught 23 panfish and 4 largemouth. I used my clousers, the fruit cocktail popper and the white Road Kill Nymph. All did well. The first 9 panfish slammed the clouser. The bass were crushing the fruit cocktail popper and I caught my largest bass ever on the fly rod with the white Road Kill Nymph.
Here are some photos of the pond we were fishing
And the fish porn
I usually dont or at least try not to put a photo of me up on here. I am camera shy but I couldnt resist with this bass. It is by far the biggest largemouth I have caught on the fly rod. I had my wife measure my shoulders this morning and it is 17 inches from shoulder to shoulder. I am guessing this bass is around 19 or so inches. Caught it on my 5wt. Great fish for me.
